An accomplished swimmer at ECU from 1968-72, Jim Griffin set several school records during his time with the Pirates before setting off into the professional world. During his career, Griffin set freshman and varsity in the 100-, 200, 500- and 1000-yard freestyle while also helping the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relay set new school marks.
He also won Southern Conference titles in the 100-, 200- and 500-yard freestyle from 1969-71. In the classroom, Griffin was an honor student and on the Dean's List while also representing ECU in competition for the Rhodes Scholarship. Griffin was also a member of the Gamma Theta Upsilon geography honor fraternity.
In 1970 he became the first ECU swimmer to compete the NCAA Division I National Championships and later the first tom swim at the AAU outdoor championships.
