ECU Athletics Hall of Fame

- Induction:
- 2001
Although he never wore a uniform or coached a team, there are few individuals who have made such a deep-felt impact on Pirate athletics as Walter L. Williams. A native of Greenville, Williams' continued vision, tireless efforts, and generosity have helped ECU gain success both athletically and academically.
Williams has spent over five decades dedicating countless hours and energy heading up fund-raising campaigns and leading projects for the Pirates. He was a driving force as co-chair of ECU's Kickoff to Victory Campaign which raised $10.8 million for the building of the strength & conditioning center, while also serving as co-chair of a campaign to fund Clark-LeClair Stadium.Â
Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum, Williams-Harvey Teams Building, Smith-Williams Center (Hall of Fame), Williams Strength & Conditioning Center and a pair of baseball entities - the Williams Jungle and Williams Hitting Facility - all bear his name in honor of his family's gracious, devoted and committed philanthropic efforts.Â
A loyal Pirate Club member since 1966, the former executive president and director emeritus also established a post-graduate (Spirit of the East) and three endowment scholarships for student-athletes before his passing in March, 2018.
