Volleyball Concludes Season With Disappointing Loss
November 16, 2002 | Volleyball
The Pirates dominated play in games one and two of the match. In the first game, with the score tied at 10, the Pirates went ahead on a kill by Pam Ferris. It would be all the Pirates needed to take control of the game. ECU went on a four point rally before allowing Houston to score again. Up 15-12, the Pirates went on a scoring run that would put them up by six before Houston had to call a timeout to regroup. ECU would not relinquish the lead, however, and the Pirates went away with the 23-30 victory.
In game two, Houston took the early lead and maintained it for a majority of the game. With Denise Hartnett serving for the Pirates, ECU scored four points to take the lead 18-16. Houston would soon tie things up and 20, but ECU would take the go-ahead point on a kill by Sarah Vick, which would give the women their final lead of the game. ECU would go on to score nine more points, to take away the win 30-28.
Houston put a marker on the board first in game three, but ECU would soon catch up and the teams would swap leads midway through the game four times, tying things up on six occasions before the Cougars took their final lead on a service error by ECU's Alexis Jones. Down 17-16, the Pirates would score only five more points as Houston earned its first win of the match 30-21.
The Cougars came out ready to play in game four, again earning the first tally of the game. East Carolina kept the score within one for the first seven points of the match-up and Houston took the lead on a kill by Riauna Knox. The kill by Knox would be all Houston needed to gain incentive to win as they rallied on to take game four 30-19.
In the final game of the match, East Carolina took a 10-7 lead under the serves of Jennifer Galimore. Soon after, Houston would catch the three point Pirates lead and tie the game at 13. Ali Roberts went to the line to serve for the Cougars and Houston knocked out its final two points of the game to win the game and the match 15-13.
Drewes tied her career high of kills with 19 which she established earlier this season against Jacksonville. She also had a season high .429 hitting percentage against league opponents. Vick had 16 kills on the night and Ferris contributed 11 for a hitting percentage of .409, a career high. Johanna Bertini ended the evening with 14 digs and Denise Hartnett had 10.
The Pirates hit .287 as a team, which was the highest hitting total against a Conference USA opponent this season.
The loss to Houston concludes the 2002 season for the Lady Pirates. The women finished the year 6-26, and 0-13 in league play.
