The two-day event which featured the Pirates facing off against opponents from High Point, Elon, and Lees-McRae ended on Saturday with both the men and women's teams playing well.
The women led the way for East Carolina with a perfect doubles record throughout the weekend as well as a solid performance in singles play on Saturday against Elon. In the No. 1 position, senior Lyndall Jordan defeated her opponent, Diana Pulupa, by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Raluca Baicu shut out her opponent, Molly Cade, by a 6-0, 6-0 count and freshman Kirstin Buchanan moved up to the No.3 spot to defeat Elizabeth Kernodle, 6-1, 6-2.
Junior Paulina Sierpinski and sophomore Cristina Meilicke picked up wins against their Elon opponents and senior Lauren Perry defeated High Point's Connie Wicks by the score of 6-2, 6-1.
The Lady Pirates dominated the doubles events against their opponents Friday night and Saturday morning. Leading the way for East Carolina was the duo of Baicu and Buchanan in the No.1 position with three doubles wins. The duo of Jordan and Sierpinski finished with a 2-0 doubles record in the No. 2 spot while the team of Kohl and Meilicke as well as the duo of Aimee Wolfe and Lindsay Wood each recorded a win in the No.3 position.
On the men's side, the Pirates recieved strong play out of their top three spots, led by junior Charl Meyer. Meyer, playing in the No.1 spot, defeated his Elon opponent, Nathan Lefevre, in three sets by a score of 6-4, 3-6, 7-6. In the No.2 position, senior Brad Sullivan defeated Pramote Malasitt by a score of 6-3, 6-1 and in the No.3 spot sophomore Paulo Baumer beat Mikael Houlst by a count of 6-1, 6-2. Freshman Nick Rose was also able to come away with a victory in the No.5 postition by defeating Richard Dutton, 7-5, 6-0.
The men's doubles results were highlighted by a sweep of Lees-McRae opponents as well as a 3-0 record in the No.1 position. The duo of Meyer and Sullivan beat their doubles opponents by scores of 8-5, 8-5, and 8-6 in the No. 1 spot on Friday and Saturday. The Pirates also won their matches in the No.2 and No.3 spots versus Lees-McRae with the duo of Rose and Baumer and Fonseca and Snyder picking up victories.
The Lady Pirates will return to the courts October 11-12 when the team hosts the ECU Invitational and the men return to action October 25-27 when the team travels to Columbia, S.C. to play in the USCChampioinships.
