Pirates Sweep Coastal Carolina 4-0
March 01, 2020 | Men's Tennis
GREENVILLE, N.C. – What started as a tight contest finished as a dominating victory as the ECU men's tennis team swept Coastal Carolina 4-0 on Sunday afternoon at the River Birch Tennis Complex.
"This was a nice win for us," said head coach Shawn Heinchon. "I thought we played inconsistent in doubles but kind of hung in there especially on court two and got the doubles point. Our guys did a great job of not relaxing as we moved into singles and for the most part got off to a great start on pretty much every court. Very impressive play today by Agustin (Tamagnone) and great clinching win by Javi (Renones)."
ECU improves to 10-2 on the season and a perfect 8-0 at home. Coastal Carolina drops to
Based on the doubles play, it looked like ECU would be in for a hotly contested battle with the Chanticleers. Diogo Marques and Federico Masetti were able to take care of business on court three, topping Francesco Cori and Daiki Tanabe 6-3. But ECU's top pairing of Agustin Tamgnone and Simon Labbe fell to Zak Talic and Joel Popov 6-3 to even the doubles play.
The doubles point came down to court two, where Javier Renones and Wisse Jonker had taken a 5-4 lead against Gonzalo Achondo and Pyry Hyrkkonen. The Coastal Carolina pair was serving with aims to tie the match. But Renones and Jonker won the critical break point to clinch both the match and the doubles point.
In the singles play, the Pirates really separated themselves from the Chanticleers. ECU won the opening set on all six courts to grab a stranglehold on the match. The first to close out his match was Tamagnone who beat Achondo 6-1, 6-3 on court four. ECU got a third point when Masetti finished off a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Juan Casetllanos on court six.
Renones had lost three straight matches coming into Sunday, but the senior snapped that streak with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Hyrkkonen on court two to clinch the match for ECU.
The Pirates will have more than a week off before they head to California for a trio of matches. ECU will take on UC Riverside, Bucknell and UC Irvine on consecutive days, starting with a match against Riverside on Tuesday, March 10.
