ECU Welcomes Coastal Carolina For Sunday Match

GREENVILLE, N.C. – Riding a 12-match home winning streak, including a perfect 7-0 this season, the ECU men's tennis team welcomes Coastal Carolina to Greenville for a Sunday afternoon match.

ECU (9-2) has not lost a home match since falling to UNC Asheville on Feb. 3, 2019. The Pirates are 7-0 in Greenville this season, outscoring opponents 40-8. Last weekend, ECU played its first two outdoor home matches, beating Bryant (5-2) and Georgia Southern (4-2). Agustin Tamagnone went undefeated in those matches, winning a pair of singles matches to move his team-best record to 18-6 and 7-1 on court four. Simon Labbe is right behind him with a 17-10 singles mark. Federico Masetti (16-6) has been a force on court six, going 7-2 at the bottom of the lineup and he leads ECU with a 9-2 record in dual matches. On court one, Diogo Marques has a 7-3 record and is 15-3 overall. In his senior year, Javier Renones is 10-10, but will be looking to end a thre-match losing streak. Rounding out the Pirates with a double-digit win total is Wisse Jonker, with the junior holding a 12-8 overall record and a 7-2 mark on court five.

In doubles, Masetti and Marques lead the team with a 9-1 record and are riding a six-match winning streak. At the top of the lineup, Labbe and Tamagnone have gone 5-1 on court one and are 8-2 as a duo. Jonker and Renones are 7-5 this season when paired together, including 5-2 in dual matches.

Coastal Carolina (4-1) will have a pair of matches in North Carolina this weekend, taking on Duke on Saturday before battling the Pirates on Sunday. The Chanticleers have won four straight matches after a 7-0 loss at Wake Forest to open the season. The most recent win was a 4-3 victory at South Carolina State Despite the score, the match was over quickly as Coastal Carolina won the doubles point and the opening three singles matches to clinch. Gonzalo Achondo is a perfect 4-0 on court three for Coastal Carolina and is 4-1 overall. Daiki Tanabe is also 4-1, going 3-1 on court four. Zak Talic has played all five matches on court one where he is 2-3. In doubles, Talic and Joel Popov have been a force on the top court, going 4-0 there. Achondo and Pyry Hyrkkonen are 2-1 as a duo on court two. It will be the first meeting between the two schools since 2018. The Pirates took a 4-3 road win that day, with Jonker and Renones winning singles matches. It snapped a five-match losing streak for the Pirates against the Chanticleers.
