October 01, 2003 | Men's Golf
Simpsonville, KY. -- East Carolina's men's team posted a final round 301 to finish tied for ninth at the second annual Cardinal Intercollegiate. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 7,001-yard Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
With 14 teams participating, the Pirates (11-14-1) where unable to make a run at the leader board in Tuesday's final round action. Senior Jeff Crowe made a move on the leaders by shooting a 71 on the last day to end up with a six-over 222 for the two-day event, and collected his first top 20 finish as a Pirate.
Fellow Pirates Jason Harris (76-73-79=228) and Robin Smith (72-77-79=228) ended up tied for 39th, while freshman Ryan Leveque finished 56th and Philip Reale, II, finished 73rd.
Eastern Kentucky captured the team championship by shooting and 871 (302-284-285) behind the play of Patrick Williams, who finished second, after posting four-under par 212. South Alabama recorded it second top three finish of the year after a 54-hole total of 872 (294-292-286), and host school Louisville rounded out the top three with its third place finish.
Gareth Maybin claimed the individual championship with a seven-under par 209 (71-68-70) and Louisville's Mark Conlon shot even par for the tournament to come in third.
"I am real proud of the way we kept competing in this tournament," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "Jeff Crowe played a great final round with the tough conditions and Ryan Leveque competed well in his first collegiate tournament. It is a little disappointing the way we have been playing so far, but we are building depth for the spring schedule, which we always seem to play better in."
The Pirates will be playing in back-to-back tournaments starting this weekend at the Franklin Street Trust Invitational, hosted by North Carolina on Oct. 3-5, and then will be heading to Charlotte for the 49ers Collegiate Classic.
