
ECU Men, Women Swim Past Cardinals

" I was very pleased with the way we swam today," ECU head coach Rick Kobe said. "We asked the kids to do something difficult since Louisville was not here in person, but they responded well and came away with a win."
ECU's women's team picked up right where it left off a season ago. The Lady Pirates won 12 of the 16 events led by sophomore Holly Williams who won the 200 Fly (2:05.04) and 200 backstroke (2:05.55). The Lady Pirates posted the top three times in four events.
The 400 medley relay team of freshman Stephanie Hathaway, sophomore Meredith Lindgren, junior Dianne Parker and junior Lindsay Holman won the event with a 4:02.21. Sophomore Sarah Hunt won the 200 Free (1:57.32) for the Lady Pirates while fellow sophomores Lauren Harvard and Adrienne Williams won their respective events. Harvard took the 100 backstroke (1:01.44) while Williams took the 50 Free (24.98).
Junior Dianne Parker placed first in the 100 Free (53.89). Freshman Jennie Meade opened up her collegiate career with a first place finish in the 500 Free (5:15.34). Sophomore Lucy Hicks won the 1 meter dive with a 211.20.
The men's team won 13 of the 16 events in the meet, taking the top three spots in two events. Junior Casey Cronin won two events - 1000 Free (9:53.70) and 100 Free (:48.92). Junior Gavin Stark swam to a first place finish in the 200 Free (1:45.00) and placed second in the 50 Free (22.37). Stark was a part of the 400 medley relay team of Andrew Dragunas, Kelly Hendrick and Zack Brown which posted a 3:36.59.
Two freshmen won their first events as Pirates. Paul Schaeffer won the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.02 while Zack Brown placed first in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.22) and the 200 breaststroke (2:13.01).
ECU's other first place finished included junior Andrew Dragunas in the 200 Fly (1:59.55), junior Justin Brinkley in the 50 Free (22.21) and senior Travis Deckert in the 500 Free (4:55.49).
The team of Stark, Daniel Walters, Kelly Hendrick and Josh Curnutte took the 400 relay with a 3:16.25.
East Carolina returns to action Saturday when they travel to the College of Charleston for a dual meet.
