
ECU Volleyball Looks for Conference Win against Charlotte

Freshman middle blocker Jaime Bevan already has 93 total blocks eclipsing ECU's 2002 individual high of 86 with seven matches remaining. Bevan also leads the team with 228 kills while hitting .287. Senior middle blocker Alexis Jones ranks seventh in Conference USA in hitting percentage with a .324 clip putting down 148 kills on 324 attempts. Junior setter Jessica Vick is in the Top 10 in C-USA in assists with 676 set assists, averaging 9.80 per game. Sophomore outside hitter Erica Wilson has led the team lately posting double-digit kills in five of ECU's last six matches. Wilson ranks second on the team with 225 kills.
The Lady Pirates (9-15, 0-6 C-USA) are fourth in the conference and 27th in the nation in service aces per game averaging 2.15 aces per game. ECU dropped two matches last weekend to No. 21 Louisville, 3-1, and No. 25 Cincinnati, 3-0. Wilson led the team against Louisville with 18 kills and against the Bearcats with nine kills.
Charlotte (7-18, 0-6 C-USA) snapped a nine-match losing streak, defeating Radford, 3-1, Wednesday. Jessica Kelly and Lisa Newell led the offensive attack for the 49ers with 14.5 and 12.5 points, respectively. Kelly notched13 kills, while Newell added 10 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Abbey Szlanfucht returned to the court for the 49ers after sitting out the last month with an ankle injury. Newell leads the team with 265 kills in 89 games and averages 3.48 kills per game. Chanda Walker is second on the team with 226 kills. Holly Kreyling leads the defense with 268 digs. Junior setter Molly McDonald runs the offense with 917 set assists in 91 games.
Last time at Charlotte, four 49ers registered double-figure totals in kills as Charlotte defeated ECU, 3-1. Abbey Szlanfucht led the way, knocking down 18 to go along with seven digs. Courtney Burg had 10 kills and a match-best 16 digs. Jessica Kelly and Lisa Newell had 10 kills as well. East Carolina had three players with more than 10 kills, led by Pam Ferris with 13. Jones added 10 kills for the Lady Pirates. The 49ers took the first two games, 30-26 and 30-28, before ECU rallied from an 11-6 deficit to take game three, 30-28. In game four, Charlotte rallied from a 16-6 deficit to win the game and the match.
Charlotte leads the all-time series, 13-9, with the 49ers winning two of the last three meetings. ECU defeated the 49ers in five games the last time in Greenville.
ECU hits the road next weekend when they travel to league leaders Tulane next Friday and Southern Miss next Saturday.
