October 05, 2003 | Men's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- East Carolina's Jason Harris moved up three spots to eighth place after shooting a one-over 73 for the second consecutive day at the Franklin Street Partners Invitational. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 7,199-yard Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
Harris (73-73=146) is nine strokes of the lead, which is held by Toshi Hirata (65-72=137) of Georgia Southern. Hirata, despite an even-par round, increased his tournament lead by three strokes over Lars Brovold (71-70=141) of Alabama and Ted Smith (66-75=141) of North Carolina, who sit in a tie for second.
Fellow Pirates Jeff Crowe (75-78=153) sits in a tie for 19th and Calle Andren (76-79=155) is tied for 28th after two rounds.
The Pirates (11-14-1) as a team, are sitting in eighth place of nine teams after a second round of 313 and a total tournament score of 615, 39 strokes behind leader and host school North Carolina.
The Tarheels (288-298=586) broke out of a first round tie with Georgia Southern (288-299=587) by shooting a 298 in the second round, while Georgia Southern posted a 299. Kentucky is in third after a 299 second round, five shots off the lead.
There are nine teams participating in this weekend's 54-hole tournament: Alabama, East Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, Virginia, and UNC Wilmington.
"We struggled a bit today," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "We need to go out and shoot a good final round to build some momentum and confidence for our team heading into the Charlotte tournament next week."
