
ECU Swimming, Diving Host Duke, GWU Saturday

The teams will swim 13 events switching between the women's teams and men's team. Saturday's format will be the 400 medley relay, 1000 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, 200 IM, diving, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, 200 backstroke. 500 freestyle, diving, 200 breaststroke and 400 freestyle relay.
ECU improved to 3-1 last weekend after knocking off Davidson on the road. The ECU women defeated the Lady Wildcats, 150-92, while the ECU men won 149-83.
Junior Diane Parker led the Lady Pirates winning two events against Davidson. Parker took the 200 Free (1:56.06), 100 Butterfly (56.63) and helped the 400 Medley relay team to a first place finish. Sophomore Holly Williams won the 400 IM in 4:31.11 and placed second in the 500 Free (5:12.49). Sophomore Adrienne Williams swam to a first place finish in the 50 Free (24.82) while teammate Lindsay Holman finished second (25.32).
On the men's side, juniors Casey Cronin and Kelly Hendrick paced the Pirates. Cronin and Hendrick each won two events. Cronin won the 400 IM in 4:12.20 edging out teammates Travis Deckert (4:20.91) and Rob Pearce (4:21.91) as ECU went 1-2-3 in the event. Cronin won the 100 Free in 48:15. Hendrick placed first in the 100 breaststoke (54.22) and also won the 50 free (22.29). Freshman John Cameron claimed the 1000 Free in 10:22.45. Junior Gavin Stark won the 200 Free (1:45.87).
The Duke men's and women's swimming and diving teams were swept by North Carolina Tuesday at Koury Natatorium. On the women's side, the Blue Devils were defeated 173-116 by the 15th-ranked Tar Heels, while the North Carolina men, ranked 24th in the nation, downed Duke 195-96. The Duke women (1-2, 0-2 ACC) picked up four individual victories in the meet. Freshman Jackie Rodriguez was the top performer in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events, recording times of 1:06.44 and 2:21.99. In the men's competition, the Blue Devils took spots one through three in the 100 breaststroke, led by freshman Kevin Arthofer, who posted a time of 58:82. Juniors John Humphrey (1:00.04) and Kevin Ko (1:00.34) took the second and third spots, respectively.
George Washington's men's swimming and diving team dropped to a 1-2 record with a 145-88 loss to Navy (5-1) on Wednesday evening at Navy's Lejeune Hall. The Colonials won five events led by freshman Sean Flaherty (Scarborough, ME/Scarborough) who won two events for the second straight meet. The standout freshman was named last week's Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week after notching the best A-10 times of the season in two events. Flaherty won the 200 freestyle in 1:57.08 and then took first in the 400 freestyle in a time of 4:09.60.
The Colonials women's swimming and diving team was victorious at La Salle in its last outting. The GW women (2-0) defeated the Explorers 125-117 and have won two straight dual meets after winning the Potomac Relays to start the season. Three of GW's women won two events to launch the Colonials past La Salle. Senior captain Kristen Fagley (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/Westminster) doubled for the second straight meet finishing first in the 200-yd freestyle with a time of 1:55.94 followed by a time of 5:07.00 in the 500-yd freestyle.
