
Swimming, Diving Defeats Duke, GWU

"We swam an incredible meet which was definitely our best team meet of the season. We defeated one of the best Duke teams and picked up a win against a solid George Washington team," ECU head swimming coach Rick Kobe said. "We also had a lot of athletes make their cuts."
On the women's side against the Blue Devils, the Lady Pirates recorded seven first place finishes. Junior Diane Parker paced ECU winning the 200 IM (2:04.75) and 100 freestyle (53.03). Jennie Meade won the 200 freestyle (1:55.14) while sophomore Adrienne Williams took first in the 50 freestyle (24.36). Freshman Kate Gordon had another strong performance winning the 200 butterfly (2:03.81) and finishing second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.21). Lucy Hicks won 3-meter diving posting a 211.50. ECU's 400 medley relay of Martha Snead, Meredith Lindgren, Parker and Williams placed first in 2:53.85.
Against George Washington, ECU recorded first place finishes in nine events, Holly Williams took the 1000 freestyle (10:26.79) and freshman Ashley Gelsomin won 1-meter diving with a 189.15. Gordon, Hicks, Adrienne Williams, Meade, Parker and the 400 medley relay team all added wins in their respective events against the Colonials.
On the men's side against Duke, the Pirates won nine events led by Matt Walker who won the 200 freestyle (1:42.22) and the 100 freestyle (46.78) and Robbie Derr who won 1-meter diving (283.50) and 3-meter diving (284.35). Kelly Hendrick took the 50 freestyle in 21.72. Junior Casey Cronin won the 200 IM in 1:54.19 while senior Andrew Dragunas won the 200 butterfly (1:53.14). Other first place finishers were Matt Wildrick in the 200 backstroke (1:54.72) and the 400 free relay of Walker, Daniel Walters, Hendrick and Gavin Stark in 3:09.52.
Against George Washington, the Pirates won nine of the 13 events led by Walker again. The 400 medley relay team of Hendrick, Zack Brown, Kenny Flory and Walters won in 3:30.58. Walker, Hendrick, Cronin, Derr, Dragunas and the 400 freestyle relay won their respective events.
Duke's women defeated George Washington 162-78 while the Blue Devil men won 174-63.
ECU returns to action next weekend when the teams travel to the Nike Cup hosted by North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
