February 26, 2003 | Men's Swimming and Diving
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- East Carolina captured its first Conference USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship with a team score of 764.50 on Tuesday at the IU Natatorium.
The Lady Pirates become the first ECU women's team in any sport to win a C-USA title.
ECU's men placed second behind TCU with a score of 723.
Over the three days of competition, the teams combined to set five new varsity records, one freshman record, and win four events.
ECU sophomore Diane Parker was named Swimmer-of-the-Meet after setting three new records in the 200 IM, 100 fly and 200 free, and having first place finishes in the 200 IM and 100 fly. Pirate head coach Rick Kobe was named Coach-of-the-Year after today's competition.
"It was a great three days," said Kobe after today's victory. "We are so happy as can be to be the first women's team to win a C-USA Championship. It gives us three different conference championships over four years. In 2000 the team was CAA champions, 2001 ECAC and today's victory in C-USA. We are really proud of the girls, and excited that we can win this prestigious championship meet."
