Pirate Tennis Falls to Winthrop

The matches were the spring dual-match home openers for both ECU squads and came against Winthrop programs that were both nationally ranked in the 2002 ITA/Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
ECU's men, who fall to 1-3 on the season, pushed the Eagles (1-1) to the limit with two singles matches going three sets each. The pivotal match came at flight three singles, where Winthrop's Adam Narczewski edged the Pirates' Paulo Baumer, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The Pirates' victories came from Charl Meyer, Felipe Fonseca, and Nick Rose in singles and Fonseca and Edward Cooper in doubles.
"I was pleased with the effort our men's team gave," ECU head coach Tom Morris said. "We haven't shown it yet, but we're going to have a pretty good year. Today's match came down to just a couple of key shots against a nationally ranked team."
The women's contest was also a grueling affair as four of the six singles matches went three sets. The Lady Pirates won just one of those four three-set matches to see their overall record slip to 3-2. Winthrop's women are now 1-0.
The Lady Pirates won matches at flights four and six in singles, with Kirstin Buchanan and Cristina Meilicke both posting victories, respectively, and at flight three doubles, where Buchanan and Paulina Sierpinski beat Winthrop's Paula Takahasi and Danielle Moita, 8-2.
"We got ahead in several matches and then played tentatively," Morris said of his women's team. "When the matches got close, we did not show the confidence to hit the shots we needed. However, that sometimes happens in these early season matches and we'll improve on that."
ECU will host five tennis matches next weekend. The Lady Pirates will face Appalachian State on Friday, Feb. 14, at 3 p.m., and will take on Campbell (11 a.m.) and Mount Olive (4 p.m.) on Saturday, Feb. 15. The ECU men will also face Campbell and Mount Olive at the same start times on Saturday.
