Pirate Netters Fall to Southern Miss
March 02, 2003 | Men's Tennis
The Pirates fall to 3-5 on the season. They lost to top-seeded and tournament champ TCU on Saturday, 4-1.
In today's match, the Pirates had chances to win the doubles point as flight one duo Charl Meyer and Brad Sullivan beat USM's Marc-Olivier Lux and Nicolas Carteret, 8-4. The flight two and three tandems both had serves broken at 6-6 and ended up with identical 8-6 losses.
In singles play, Paulo Baumer and Nick Rose recorded victories for the Pirates at flights three and six, respectively.
"I thought we played hard overall," ECU head coach Tom Morris said. "When we lost the doubles point, that was pretty much the match. We were right there in it, but couldn't quite take advantage of some opportunities. But we did play very well up and down the line."
ECU entered the six-team tournament as the No. 6 seed. Southern Miss was seeded fourth.
The Pirates are next in action at Elon on March 11.
In other ECU tennis news, the Lady Pirate tennis team had its weekend match with South Florida cancelled because of inclement weather. The two Conference USA teams were scheduled to play in Charlotte on Saturday.
