
Softball Drops A Doubleheader To Louisville

Game one remained scoreless until the sixth inning when Louisville put its first run of the day one the board. With a runner on second base, Louisville's Michelle Vasquez doubled to center field to bring in the winning run. Kristen Johnson doubled for the Pirates in the sixth, and eventually made her way to third, but was left on base after Chrystal Carter flied out to center field.
In the seventh, Louisville added two more runs. Keola Calderon doubled to left field to start things off for the Cardinals and she was followed by Lisa McMillan who singled to right field and place Calderon on third. With Calderon and McMillan on base, Aja Sherman stepped up to the plate and doubled to center to send both runners across home plate. East Carolina was unable to come back in the bottom of the seventh and Louisville took game one 3-0.
Defensively, East Carolina made two double plays in the game The first came in the second inning when Christine Sheridan caught a line drive and threw the ball over to first for the tag. Sheridan again created a double play in the fifth catching a ground ball and tossing it to second and then Johnson tossed the ball to first for the final out. East Carolina had only three hits in the game. Maggie Lingo was credited with the loss for East Carolina, dropping to 3-6 on the season, and Jessica Rak earned the win for Louisville, improving to 6-4.
Louisville struck early and hard in game two, putting its first three runs of the game on the board in the first inning. With one runner on, Lisa Estes homered to deep left field for the first two Cardinal runs. The third came on a single by McMillan.
In inning two, Louisville added four more runs. One run came on a walk, and another when a player was hit by a pitch. The final two runs of the inning came on a single by Calderon. The Cardinals scored their final run in the top of the fifth when with one runner on, Vasquez doubled to deep center field to send the eighth run across home plate. The Pirates again were scoreless in the fifth, and the game was called complete due to the eight-run rule.
East Carolina had five hits in the game. Sheridan was the only player with more than one hit, she finished the game with two. East Carolina used three different pitchers in the outing. The loss, however was given to Brittany Boyd who dropped to 5-3. Sherman earned the win for Louisville. She improved to 4-2 on the year.
East Carolina will play the third and final game on the Louisville series tomorrow afternoon at the ECU Softball Field. That game is scheduled for a noon start.
