Lady Pirate Golfers In First Place After Round One
March 08, 2003 | Men's Golf
Fourteen teams are participating in the third annual tournament hosted by East Carolina. The Pirates lead all teams after the first round with a score of 287, one stroke under par. The first round score breaks the previous school record for the Lady Pirates of 288, which was set in in the final round of last year's Bradford Creek Women's Intercollegiate tournament.
UNC Wilmington is in second place, 14 strokes off the Pirate lead. This year the Pirates are 1-1 against the Seahawks.
"Head-to-head is a big thing for us because of our regional rankings," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "Both teams are inside the bubble for the NCAA. So any win is a big one for us."
There is a three-way tie for individual first place after round one. ECU?s Heidi Helliesen shot a 70 (33-37), along with Ashley Hovda (35-35) of Western Carolina and Aubrey Mosley (35-35) of Newberry, who is playing as an individual in the competition.
"Heidi is hitting the ball beautifully," said Williams. "If she continues at this rate, we will have a chance to win tomorrow."
The Pirates placed six golfers, including Ashley Leonard and Alyssa Hayes who are playing as individuals, in the top 20.
The final round will begin at 8 a.m. on Sunday March 9.
