
ECU Men Fall in C-USA Tennis Tournament Opener

MILWAUKEE -- Seventh-seed UAB kept the higher seeds perfect on the opening day of the 2003 Conference USA Men's Tennis Tournament as the Blazers downed 10th seed East Carolina, 4-1. The match, played on Wednesday night, was the final competition of the day in Milwaukee.
The Blazers (10-12) began the match by winning the doubles point, picking up wins at flights two and three. ECU's top doubles team of Charl Meyer and Brad Sullivan won at flight one, 8-5, over UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski and Patrick Suhrbier.
East Carolina (8-12) also claimed a win at the flight two singles spot by Meyer, but UAB picked up victories by Bastian Gruendler, Mitrovski and Suhrbier to advance to the quarterfinals.
The Blazers take on second-seed TCU on Friday at 9 a.m. CT at Helfaer Tennis Stadium. East Carolina meets DePaul in a ninth-place semifinal match at LeClub in Milwaukee at 11:30 a.m. CT.
