ECU's Jason Harris Finishes Fourth At First Reliance Intercollegiate
September 23, 2003 | Men's Golf
FLORENCE, S.C. -- East Carolina's Jason Harris shot a final round 76 to claim a share of fourth place at the 19th annual First Reliance Intercollegiate. The tournament, hosted by Francis Marion University, was being played at the par-72, 7,041-yard Country Club of South Carolina course.
Harris, a senior, was unable to capitalize on yesterday's momentum that saw him shoot a second round 66. The round of 66 tied a school low round record shared by six other Pirates. Harris would finish the two-day, 54-hole tournament four shots back of the leader with an even-par performance of 216 (74-66-76).
Gareth Maybin of South Alabama claimed the individual title shooting a two-day 212 (71-71-70). A pair of Conference USA golfers finished under par as well, with Bill Roach, Jr. of Tulane (69-70-75=214) and Brad Quiri of USF (72-75-68=215) finishing second and third respectively.
ECU sophomore Robin Smith completed his first collegiate tournament firing a 221 (72-76-73) to claim a tie for 19th.
Jacksonville State captured the team championship in a one-hole playoff with Southern Miss. The playoff consisted of each squad's five team members playing the par-4 18 hole, with the four low scores counting. JSU finished the hole at one-under-par, while the Golden Eagles finished three-over. The Gamecocks recorded an 873 (295-282-296) for the 54-hole tournament. The Golden Eagles also finished the tournament with a 873 (295-290-288), followed by South Alabama in third with a 874.
The Pirates (7-6) finished seventh out of 14 teams with a combined two-day score of 884 (293-289-302).
"We really didn't play that well today," said assistant coach Frank Adams, III. "We got off to a slow start and was not able to recover at all. There were some bright spots today for us individually, but as a team we have some work to do. The good things is this is our first tournament of the year, and we will get better from here on."
The Pirates will be return to action on Sept. 29-30, when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to participate in the Cardinal Intercollegiate.
