Tennis Opens ECU Invite on Positive Note

Playing the first round of singles matches against Mount Olive, ECU's men won five of six while the women took four of five.
Play continues in the five-team, flighted tournament on Friday with a full slate of singles and doubles matches throughout the day. Also competing this weekend are players from Elon, Charleston Southern, and High Point.
In men's competition today, senior Charl Meyer cruised to his 15th straight singles victory with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Mount Olive's Rafael Bustos at flight one.
Paulo Baumer, Mark Gellard, Felipe Fonseca, and J.R. Gudger also posted wins for the Pirates in their second tournament of the fall season.
"As a whole, our guys played very well today," ECU head coach Tom Morris said. "Charl played extremely well at one."
For the ECU women, Kirstin Buchanan, Raluca Baicu, Cristina Meilicke, and newcomer Sara Boseman each posted straight-set wins. It was the Lady Pirates' first action of the season.
"That was a very good win for Kirstin at No. 1," Morris said. "Raluca had struggled against her opponent when facing her last year, but played well against her today. We were very solid at the top three, and Sara played well also. With just three of our top players back from last year, I was concerned going in, but I'm happy with the girls' results."
Play gets underway Friday morning with ECU's men taking on Elon in singles at 10 a.m. The ECU women take the court at 11:30 a.m. against Elon in singles. The two squads will also play singles against High Point at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.
