Fonseca, Gellard Place Third at Power of One
January 28, 2004 | Men's Tennis
The tournament, which wrapped up Sunday, raised nearly $17,000 for the Power of One Mentoring Program in Pitt County and Pamlico Pals in Beaufort County. The tournament was sponsored by WITN and PCS Phosphate.
Among the doubles entries in the event were collegiate players from ECU and UNC Wilmington, as well as many post-collegiate athletes and club pros.
Gellard, a freshman from Reading, England, pulled double-duty in the tournament as he also competed as a doubles pair with teammate Nick Rose, replacing Paulo Baumer who was a late scratch from competition.
Gellard and Fonseca advanced further in the tournament than any other college duo. Their only losses came to tournament finalists Will Bull, a former junior No. 1 player, and Bret Garnett, the head pro at Lake Hickory Country Club, and Matt Rowe, director of Courtside Athletic Club, and Sushell Narla, the 1996 U.S. National Amateur Singles Champion.
The Pirates won three of their four matches against UNC Wilmington in the draw.
ECU's men open spring dual-match play on Tuesday, Feb. 3, when they hosts Conference USA rival Charlotte at 2 p.m. at the ECU Tennis Complex.
