
Swimming, Diving Defeats College of Charleston

"I was very pleased with all of our swimmers today," ECU head swimming coach Rick Kobe said. "We swam very fast. This could be the best team we've ever had here and we've had some great teams. We have some quality depth that will certainly help us this year."
"Our divers have been performing very consistently early," ECU diving coach Rich MacDonald said. "I was very excited about their performance today. They're well ahead of where they should be this early in the season."
Freshman Josh Barthlow set a new varsity record in the 100 backstroke winning the event in 50.60.
On the women's side, freshmen EC Moore and Megan Pulaski paced the team each winning two events. Moore won the 100 backstroke (1:00.66) and the 200 backstroke (2:07.78) while Pulaski took the 200 freestyle (1:55.87) and 500 freestyle (5:03.79). Jennie Meade won the 1000 freestyle (10:34.94). Senior Diane Parker picked up where she left off last season winning the 100 breaststroke (1:05.87). Junior Holly Williams, senior Marty Snead, Kelly Shinton and Kate Gordon won their respective events. Freshman Christie Icenhower scored a 240.38 in 3 meter diving and teammate Ashley Gelsomin won 1 meter diving (237.90). The 200 medley relay team of Moore, Gordon, Parker and Snead placed first in 1:49.96.
On the men's side, Barthlow paced the Pirate men with the win in the 100 backstroke. Seniors Dean Cheek and Casey Cronin each placed first in two events. Cheek won the 1000 freestyle (9:59.82) and 200 backstroke (1:56.31). Cronin took the 200 freestyle (1:42.59) and 200 breaststroke (2:09.09). Senior Justin Brinkley won the 100 breaststroke in 21:78 and fellow senior Gavin Stark placed first in the 100 freestyle (46.89). Senior Greg Detwiler won 3 meter diving posting a 252.08. Freshman Drew Greco and sophomore Parker Bostick won their events. ECU's 200 medley team of Barthlow, Cronin, Greg Neville and Kelly Hendrick took first place in 1:34.68.
College of Charleston swept both 200 freestyle relay events. Greg Libert won the 500 freestyle (4:51.77) for the Cougar men. Alex Gray registered a win in the 100 butterfly (54.64). Brittany Fieldson won the 50 freestyle (24.67) for the Lady Cougars. The Cougars also won women's 3 meter diving and the women's and men's 400 IM.
East Carolina returns to the pool next weekend the Pirates host Davidson at 2 p.m. next Saturday.
