
Baseball Blanks Delaware, 4-0

GREENVILLE, N.C.- Greg Bunn and Dustin Sasser combined for their second shutout of the season and Trevor Lawhorn hit a three-run home run as East Carolina (6-0) stayed perfect on the season with a 4-0 win over Delaware Saturday afternoon at Harrington Field. Bunn struck out eight Blue Hens and allowed only two hits in seven innings of work.
ECU benefitted from five Delaware errors as the Pirates out-hit the Blue Hens, 6-3. Sasser relieved Bunn in the eighth inning and pitched the final two innings striking out three and allowing one hit. Lawhorn led the Pirates going 1-for-4 with three RBI. Ryan Jones hit his third home run of the season to finish 1-for-2 with one run and one RBI. Jones' solo home run to right field broke a scoreless tie putting the Pirates on top, 1-0, in the bottom of the third.
Lawhorn's three-run homer came in the bottom of the fifth. After Mark Minicozzi reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on Jones' sacrifice bunt, Jamie Paige walked giving the Pirates two baserunners. Lawhorn launched a shot over the left field wall for his second homer of the season to make it, 4-0.
Bunn was sensational again making his second career start. He retired the final 17 batters he faced before giving way to Sasser. In 12 innings of work this season, Bunn hasn't allowed an earned run while striking out 16 batters and giving up three hits. Ryan Norwood, Jake Smith, Minicozzi, Jones and Billy Richardson each had one hit for the Pirates. Brock Donovan, Ed McDonnell and Brian Valichka each had a single for the Blue Hens.
Scott Rambo took the loss for Delaware. Rambo allowed only one earned run on five hits in five innings of work. He struck out four and walked three.
ECU and Delaware wrap up the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The Pirates will send freshman right-hander Ricky Brooks to the mound while Delaware is expected to start right-hander Chris Garrick.
