
Pirate Golf Stumbles in Final Round of Birkdale Collegiate Classic

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. ? ECU men's golf recorded a final score 938 (307-310-321) for an 11th place finish at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic. The tournament was being held at the par-72, 7,013-yard course at the Birkdale Golf Club.
Central Florida rallied from fifth place to win the team portion of the tournament as it posted a 296 final round, for a one-shot (902) victory of UNC Wilmington (298-298-307=903). The Knights trailed by 10 shots entering the final round but made up ground thanks to an even-par final round of 72 from Andreas Hoegberg and a 73 from Steven Bain.
UNC Greensboro finished third at 909 (304-297-308=909), while Charlotte was fourth at 910 (297-299-314), and Miami (Ohio) rounded out the top-five.
The Pirates (43-58-5) were one of 15 teams participating in this year's tournament along with: Akron, Belmont Abbey College, Charlotte, Davidson, James Madison, Maryland, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois, Old Dominion, UCF, UNC Greensboro, UNC Wilmington, Virginia Commonwealth, and Wofford.
UNCG's Andy Bare won the individual title in a three-way playoff. Bare finished at six-over 222 along with Charlotte's Matt Mincer and Wofford's Daniel Sloan. Sloan was eliminated on the first playoff hole and Bare ended the playoff on the second hole with a birdie.
ECU junior Brandon Pace shot a final round 80 to record a 28th placement with a score of 231. Senior Jason Harris finished tied for 35th (75-78-80=233), and freshman Ryan Leveque posted a final round 76 for a share of 41st place (79-80-76=235).
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, Mar. 26 when they head to Greenville, S.C. for the Furman Intercollegiate.
