
Lady Pirates Sit In Seventh At The Liz Murphey Classic

ATHENS, GA. ? The East Carolina women's golf team finds themselves sitting in familiar territory after the first round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic. ECU is currently sitting in seventh place out of 18 teams after posting a 301 team score at the par-72, 6,014-yard Georgia Country Club course.
ECU (85-28-1) is currently 10 strokes behind first round leader and nationally ranked (No. 6) Ohio State (291). Host school Georgia (No. 5) and No. 1 Duke are tied for second with a round of 292, followed by No. 4 Auburn at 293.
The Lady Pirates (No. 54) are one of 18 teams participating in the prestigious Liz Murphey Classic along with: Duke (No.1), Georgia (No. 5), Ohio State (No.6), , Auburn (No. 8), Oklahoma State (No. 10), Michigan State (No. 15), , Wake Forest (No. 18), Tennessee (No. 22), Furman (No. 23), South Carolina (No. 27), Arkansas (No. 28), Florida State (No. 33), Kent State (No. 35), Mississippi (No. 39), Alabama (No. 41), Mississippi State (No. 62), and Kentucky (No. 77).
Duke's Brittany Lang leads the individual portion of the tournament after firing a first round 66 (31-35) and has a two stroke advantage over Nicole Hage (34-34=68) from Auburn. Sitting in third is Lindsay Knowlton (69) from Ohio State, followed by Allison Fouch (Michigan State), Katie Quinney (Florida State), and Ann Marie Kersten (Michigan State) with scores of 70.
ECU's Margaret Mitchell, tied for 13th, is the lone Pirate in the top 20 after posting a 73 (35-38). Fellow Pirate Adrienne Millican is tied for 27th (75), Jessica Krasny is tied for 34th (76), Heidi Helliesen is tied for 43rd (77) and Ashley Leonard is 91st with a score of 84. "We had a very solid start," said ECU head coach Kevin Williams. "There are 11 of the top 30 teams in the country playing here this weekend, and right now we are ahead of five of them. We will need to come out and have another round like this over the next two days to have a chance to place in the top five." Second round action will begin Saturday morning.
