GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina University head golf coach Kevin Williams has announced the signing of Martin Nicholls (Cali, Coulmia, South America) and Chris Ault (Leavittown, Pa.) to the men's golf team. Both Nicholls and Ault inked National Letters of Intent on Thursday, April 15, for the 2004-05 season.
During the 2003 season, Nicholls had a top five Junior National ranking and captured the Colombian Junior National Championship after a second place finish during the qualification round. He also recorded a pair of top eight finishes at the Colombian Amateur Qualifications (seventh) and eighth at the Chile Junior International Open. Nicholls competed on the 2003 Central Florida Junior Golf Tour and claimed third place honors at the Hugh Baiocchi Junior Championships. Nicholls currently attends Colombo Britonico High School.
"Martin is a very consistent ball striker," said Williams. "He has a technically sound short game and is very tough mentally. His match play record reveals this toughness. With the loss of Jason Harris, the career low stroke average holder, we were looking for someone with his consistency, and I feel Martin can give us this."
Chris Ault comes to ECU as a three-time all-league honoree at Pennsbury High School. As a sophomore and senior, Ault qualified for the Pennsylvania State championships, finishing 20th in his senior year.
In 2003, Ault captured the Trenton District Men's Amateur Championships and qualified for the U.S. Junior Amateur National Championships. During the fall, he placed second in two FCWT events at Seaview in Absecon, N.J., and Penn State, State College, Pa. Over the past summer, Ault finished seventh in the nationally prestigous Insurance Junior Classic and posted a final round score of 67.
"Chris can go low, and we are in need of this capability," stated Williams. "He reminds me so much of Jonathan Hill, who set a school record for low stroke average in a year. He is explosive and long but once Chris learns how to manage his game, he will make a huge impact on our program."
Nicholls and Ault round out the Pirate recruiting class and join Ryan Solan of North Mecklenburg (Charlotte, N.C.) and transfer Ryan Neal of Wayland Baptist (Texas) as 2004 signees.
"With the addition of these two young men to our 2004 recruiting class, a couple of talented recruited walk-ons, I feel very excited that this group will turn this program back around very quickly."
