April 21, 2004 | Men's Golf
Dade City, Fla. -- The East Carolina men's golf team posted a final round 305 finishing 11th at the 2004 Conference USA Men's Golf Championship. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 7,153-yard Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Florida.
The Pirates (65-88-5) were unable to capitalize on their second round momentum and dropped three spots to 11th, 28 strokes out of third place. Senior Jason Harris recorded a one-over par 73 in the final and finished tied for 23rd overall, the highest ranking by a Pirate in the tournament. Calle Andren finished with a three-day total of 228, Adam Howell posted a 54-hole score of 229, while Ryan Leveque shot 231 and Robin Smith 234.
Leveque, a freshman from Charlotte, N.C., took home All-Freshman accolades for the Pirates. On the season, Ryan recorded a pair of top-5 finishes in five tournaments. He took home the Pirate Fall Intercollegiate championship with a tournament score of 213. In the spring, Leveque posted a fourth place finish at the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate, with a 54-hole score of 211.
Guided by Adam Meyer's wire-to-wire lead, the No. 10 ranked TCU men's golf team turned in a final round score of 287 to claim its third straight Conference USA Tournament title. Meyer claimed medalist honors, following rounds of 68 and 69, Monday and Tuesday, with a three-under par, 69 on the final day for a tournament best 206, finishing 10 under par. The Horned Frogs finished with a tournament total of 859, winning by 12 strokes.
Meyer's three-round total of 206 was the second-best score in Conference USA Championship history, just one stroke shy of TCU's Brad Guetz, who fired a 205 at the 2002 Championship in Navarre, Fla.
Charlotte produced three of the top six finishers en route to a second place showing with an 871. Ray Sheedy, who fired a three-under, 69 on the final day, placed second with an overall score of 215, one-under par. Matthew Mincer also shot a three-under, 69 on Wednesday to finish third at 217. Scott McNeil was one-over par at 70 to close out at 218, tying him for fourth place with TCU's David Schultz and UAB's Clark Brown. Each of the top six finishers made up the All-Tournament team.
Southern Miss produced a third place finish with a total of 880, the third time in four years that it has placed in third. UAB was two shots behind the Golden Eagles, shooting an 882. USF rounded out the top five with a score of 885.
Houston (894), Tulane (897), Louisville (898), Memphis (898) and Marquette (902) rounded out spots 6-10, while East Carolina (908), Saint Louis (910), Cincinnati (936) and DePaul (950), finished 11-14, respectively.
A total of 13 players finished under par on the tournament's final day, a significant improvement from just two that shot lower than 72 on the opening day and eight that were below on the second day.
Conference USA also announced its 2004 awards on Wednesday, with TCU taking two of the three individual accolades.
Adam Meyer, who was the Conference USA Freshman of the Year last season, was named as the league's 2004 Player of the Year. Bill Montigel earned Coach of the Year honors for the third year in a row as a member of C-USA, and the fifth time in his career. Tulane's Michael Thompson won the Freshman of the Year award, becoming the first Green Wave golfer to win the award as a member of C-USA.
Meyer was joined by TCU teammates Colby Beckstrom and David Schultz as first team All-Conference USA selections, giving the Horned Frogs three first team picks for the second year in a row. Also named to the first team were Matthew Mincer of Charlotte and Chris Cousins of UAB. Nine different schools had at least one player earn first, second or third team All-Conference recognition. TCU had the most selections with four, while Memphis and UAB each had two.
