April 25, 2004 | Softball
In game one, the Billikens roared out of the gate quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first. Adrienne May singled, and Kerri Higgins singled. A ground out moved up both runenrs before AshLeigh Williams was walked intentionally to load the bases. Beth Schomaker drove in the first run of the game when she worked a walk for a 1-0 SLU lead. Christy Ernst then pounded a double to right center to open a 4-0 Billiken lead.
ECU pushed across three runs in the third, but then erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning. The big hit in the frame was Mandi Nicols' three-run homer. The Pirates tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh. Higgins plated the last SLU run with an RBI grounder in the bottom of the seventh. Brentley Bridgeforth went the distance for ECU to notch the win.
In the second contest, ECU took the early lead when Dany'ele Hill's double ended a three-run top of the first inning. East Carolina pitcher Keli Harrell was outstanding and set down the first 12 Billiken batters of the game. AshLeigh Williams led off the fifth inning with an infield single for the first SLU hit of the game. Logan Justice followed with a two-run home run as the Billikens closed to 3-2.
However, the Pirates earned those two runs back in the sixth on Lara Brickhouse's two-run shot for a 5-2 ECU margin. Williams started a SLU comeback with a double and in the process broke the single-season total bases record with 80. The previous record of 79 was held by Nicole Bohnenstiehl in 2002. Christy Ernst and Justice worked consecutive walks to load the bases. However, Harrell got the final two outs to cap a 12-strikeout effort and a complete game win.
