
Softball Drops A Pair Of Games To Southern Miss

With the losses, ECU falls to 44-18-1 overall and 8-12 in Conference USA. Southern Miss improved to 28-22 overall and 15-4 in league play.
Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning, when ECU plated its first run. Senior Lacassa Hill led off the frame with a triple off the wall in right field and then scored on a single through the left side by Leigh Savoy.
USM threatened to tie the game in the fifth, but failed to score leaving the bases loaded.
Sara Boyd led off the sixth inning with a solo home run to tie the game at 1-1. ECU put two runners on in the bottom half of the inning, but could not surge ahead as the game remained tie until the ninth.
With two outs in the top of the ninth, Ashley Brenan put the Golden Eagles on top with a solo home run to center field. USM had a chance to increase its lead as the next two batters reached base, before Bridgeforth forced Boyd to ground out. Holaway then retired the Pirates in order during the bottom half of the inning.
The second game was an offensive onslaught by the Golden Eagles as they pounded out 10 hits and posted a pair of five-run innings. USM opened the scoring with five runs in the second inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Jessica Huerta. Southern Miss then plated an additional five runs in the top of fourth, highlighted by a two-run triple from Auriel Jenkins. Brenan later hit her second home run of the day in the sixth.
ECU scored its only two runs of the game in the sixth as Krista Jessup singled up the middle to plate Hill and Savoy.
Danielle Wymer picked up the win for Southern Miss, while Keli Harrell suffered the loss.
The third and final game of the series is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start Sunday morning.
