
Pirates Fall To Memphis In Five Games

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-Pirate volleyball forced Memphis into a fifth game before the Tigers sealed the victory with a 15-6 win in game five to seal the 3-2 win Friday night in Elma Roane Fieldhouse. Pam Ferris and Kelley Wernert each picked up 15 kills while Memphis' Ashley Liford recorded a match-high 18 kills.
East Carolina drops to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in Conference USA play while Memphis improves to 4-1 in conference play and 12-9 overall on the season.
Erica Wilson joined Ferris and Wernert in double-digits, recording 14 kills on the night. Wilson led the Pirates with a .429 attack percentage, committing just two errors on 28 attack attempts. Heidi Krug continued to play well in leading the ECU offense, collecting 54 assists, five kills, six digs, three block assists and two service aces. Libero Trish Monroe led the ECU defense with 16 digs while Johanna Bertini added 12 and Caitlin Daly picked up 11. Jaime Bevan led the defensive effort at the net with one solo block and three block assists while Wilson added four block assists.
In addition to Liford offensively for the Tigers, four other players finished with double digit kills. Nancy Nellans recorded 16 kills, Fehi Tuivai picked up 15 kills and Melissa Nance and Colette Ramirez each added 11. Laura Cote' directed the Tiger offense with 61 assists, while adding 15 digs to record one of two Memphis double-doubles. Nellans led the team with 22 digs to record the other Tiger double-double. Christen Clayton was also a force defensively with 17 digs while Nance led the team at the net with three solo blocks and four block assists.
ECU took the early lead, 30-27, before Memphis picked up consecutive wins of 30-25 and 30-23. ECU tied the match back up with a 30-27 win in the fourth game before the Tigers clinched the win with a nine-point victory in the fifth and final game. Memphis out-hit ECU .232-to-.169 while both teams recorded 67 digs.
The Pirates return to the court Saturday night when the team travels to Birmingham to take on UAB at Bartow Arena at 7 p.m.
