Jefferson Leads ECU To A 3-1 Win Over Tulsa

GREENVILLE, N.C.--For the second consecutive match, five Pirates finished with double-digit kills as East Carolina defeated Tulsa, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. Pam Ferris led the Pirates with 16 kills while Kim Jefferson added 15 kills and a career-high eight block assists.
ECU (14-10, 5-6 C-USA) got off to a fast start for the second time this weekend, winning the first two games, 30-27 and 30-22. Tulsa (20-5, 7-4 C-USA) rebounded to win game three, 30-28, before the Pirates claimed the victory with a 30-25 win in the fourth game.
In addition to Ferris and Jefferson offensively, Erica Wilson recorded 14 kills while Kelley Wernert and Mingon Dubenion collected 12 and 11 kills respectively. Four different Pirates hit better than .400, led by Dubenion who hit .476, committing just one error on 21 attack attempts. Heidi Krug reached the 60-assist mark for the third time in the last four matches, tallying 62 (15.5 apg). For the first time in her career, Trish Monroe recorded at least 20 digs for the second consecutive match, finishing with a team-best 21. Johanna Bertini also played well defensively, adding 11 digs while Ferris recorded another double-double with 10 digs in addition to her 16 kills. As a team, ECU collected a season-high 14 total blocks. In addition to Jefferson's one solo block and eight block assists, Ferris finished with one solo block and four block assists while Dubenion added a solo block and two block assists.
Kassiana Urnau led Tulsa with 17 kills while three others finished in double-digits. Dana Weddle and Germana Hilario tallied 14 and 13 kills respectively while Sam Rutherford led the team hitting .500, collecting 10 kills while committing just one error on 18 attack attempts. Julia Silva finished with 55 assists and Evyn Wills was the lone Golden Hurricane to record double-digit kills, finishing with 11. Weddle led Tulsa at the net with five block assists.
In game one, the Pirates were led by Jefferson and Ferris who combined for eight kills as ECU out-hit Tulsa, .250-to-.109, to go up 1-0 on the Golden Hurricane. Jefferson recorded four of her eight block assists in the first game. ECU hit a match-best .633 in game two, tallying 20 kills while committing just one error on 30 attack attempts. Jefferson led all Pirates with six kills in game two while Krug directed the Pirate offense with 17 assists. Hilario led Tulsa in game three with six kills while Ferris recorded five for ECU. Wilson and Wernert helped the Pirates close out the match in game four with the two outside hitters combining on nine kills.
ECU will return to the court Friday, Nov. 4 when the team travels to Orlando to take on UCF at 7 p.m. before taking on Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Saturday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m.
