CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's swimming and diving teams recently concluded competition at the prestigious Nike Cup on the campus of the University of North Carolina. Several swimmers posted their fastest times of the season, while reaching the finals.
The Lady Pirates posted their top times of the season in 10 events led by junior Kate Gordon and freshman Allison Miller, who each recorded the team's fastest times of the year in three events.
Gordon placed among the top 10 in both the 100 and 200-yard butterfly. She earned a fifth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.19 and seventh in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.82. She also qualified for the finals in the 200 IM, where she was joined by teammates Holly Williams and Kelly Shinton.
Miller recorded her highest finish of the meet by placing fifth in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 57.14. She placed sixth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:03.28, while also reaching the finals of the 400 IM.
Distance swimmer Jennie Meade qualified for the finals in three events, posting the team's top times in the 200, 500, and 1650-yard freestyle events. Her time of 17:17.82 in the 1650 free, which earned her 10th place, is eight seconds faster than her closest teammate this season.
Meghan Brosi and Megan Pulaski joined her in the finals of each of those events. Kimberly Brewer and Brennan Gaeckle also reached the finals of the 1650-yard freestyle.
Senior sprinter Adrienne Williams missed breaking her own varsity record in the 50-yard freestyle by 0:00.08, but recorded her fastest time of the year during the finals, 0:23.72.
Shinton also recorded a pair of top 10 finishes, placing ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke and 10th in the 200-yard breaststroke. Her time of 1:05.24 in the 100-ayrd breaststroke was her personal best time as well as ECU's fastest time of the season in the event.
Shinton along with Adrienne Williams, Miller and Amanda Duncan placed seventh in the 400-yard medley relay and ninth in the 200-yard medley relay. Williams and Duncan joined Gordon and Sarah Hunt on the 200-yard freestyle relay team to earn a 10th place finish.
Adrienne Williams and Gordon teamed with Meade and senior Courtney Felker to earn an eighth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle with a time of 3:31.12.
East Carolina will resume competition following the Thanksgiving holidays at the U.S. Open in Auburn, Ala., December 1-3.
