
ECU Falls to Winthrop 70-48

ROCK HILL, SC (www.winthropeagles.com) -- Winthrop used a smothering defensive effort and 54 percent shooting from the floor to down visiting East Carolina 70-48 on Sunday afternoon, the Eagles 19th straight home court victory.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Winthrop and improves its record to 5-2 while ECU dropped its fourth straight decision and goes to 3-5.
The Eagles jumped out to a 34-18 halftime lead as they held ECU to just four total field goals, all from 3-point range. For the game the Pirates could manage just 13 field goals and finished the game shooting a cold 31
Senior James Shuler led Winthrop with 14 points while 10 different Eagles reached the scoring column. Freshman point guard DeAndre Adams sparked the Eagles off the bench after starter Chris Gaynor got into early foul trouble. He finished the game with a career-best six assists in 25 minutes of action and forced ECU's guards into numerous turnovers. The Pirates finished the game with 27 turnovers compared to 16 by Winthrop. Adams came into the game with 10:34 left to play and Winthrop holding a slim 12-11 lead.
Winthrop outscored ECU 11-2 over the next six minutes and led 23-13 following a made free throw by Craig Bradshaw. After knocking down three treys in the first 4 minutes and 43 seconds, ECU did not make another field goal until another three by Sam Hinnant with 2:13 remaining in the first half, a drought of more than 13 minutes. Corey Rouse lead the Pirates with 12 points and Jeremy Ingram knocked down three from beyond the arc but ECU was unable to come up with the rally.
Winthrop turned in its second best shooting effort of the season, connecting on 23 of 43 field goals for 53.5 percent, including 5 of 9 from behind the arc. The Eagles also handed out a season-high 18 assists compared to just nine by the Pirates.
