Men's Golf Finishes 16th At UCF-Rio Pinar Intercollegiate
February 15, 2005 | Men's Golf
ORLANDO, Fla. - The East Carolina men's golf team carded a final round 294 and finished in 16th place at the UCF/ Rio Pinar Intercollegiate. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 6,978-yard Rio Pinar Country Club.
Senior Adam Howell finished tied for 37th after posting a second round of 74 and third round of 72 for a 223 total. Fellow classmate Brandon Pace posted an 18-hole score of 71 in the third round for the Pirates (37-51-2) and finished tied for 74th.
Andreas Hoegberg led UCF to victory with a 4-under-par 68 as the Golden Knights won the 18-team event by six shots over UNC-Wilmington, while Hoegberg claimed medalist honors in a playoff. Louisville finished third and Charlotte, which shot the low round of the day with a 5-under-par 283, and moved from eighth to fourth. Tulane rounded out the top five.
Hoegberg birdied the par-5 10th hole in the playoff to win the event. He hit his second shot just left of the green while Chris Wheeler (Tulane) and Joe Deraney (Miss. State) were forced to lay up because of errant drives. Hoegberg chipped his ball to within two feet and tapped it in for the win after Deraney made par and Wheeler had a tap in left for par.
The Pirates will be back on the links on March 14-15 when they travel to Aiken, S.C. to participate in the Cleveland Collegiate Championship.
