DAVIDSON, N.C. ? After dropping the opening doubles point, the Davidson women's tennis team bounced back to take all six singles matches and earn a 6-1 win over visiting East Carolina Tuesday afternoon at Covington Courts. With the win, Davidson moves to 4-2 for the season and snaps the Pirates' (9-3) seven-match winning streak.
East Carolina easily won the first and third doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Kristin Buchanan and Mireia Gol tallied the opening four games at first doubles and then cruised to the 8-2 win. Meanwhile, ECU's Raluca Baicu and Alex Smith pulled away from Davidson's Kate Levitt and Kim Whelan in the third doubles contest, 8-3.
In singles, the Wildcats responded with four straight-set triumphs to clinch the match. Senior Meghan Fillnow, making her spring debut today, edged out Baicu at number four singles, 6-4, 7-5. Meanwhile, senior Kelly Fillnow (#1), Levitt (#5) and Whelan (#6) also prevailed in two sets. Because the match had already been decided, the number two and three singles matches played a tie-breaker instead of a full third set to decide the victor.
Davidson has the rest of the week off before traveling to Florida next week for spring break. The Wildcats will first take on Central Florida on Monday, Feb. 28, at 1 p.m.
