
Pirate Swimmers and Divers Victorious Over UNC Wilmington

The East Carolina women (7-2) destroyed the Seahawks 168-76, while the men (8-1) cruised to a 133-108 victory.
"This was a huge meet for our swimmers and we really swam well today in front of a sell-out crowd," ECU head swimming coach Rick Kobe said. "This was a great way to finish out the regular season by beating our in-state rival."
Freshman Megan Pulaski led the Lady Pirates with wins in the 1000 freestyle (10:13.22) and 500 freestyle (5:03.72). With her performance in the 1000 freestyle, Pulaski broke her previous record by more than five seconds. Diane Parker placed first in the 200 IM (2:07.15) and the 200 breaststroke (2:22.81). Juniors Adrienne and Holly Williams won the 50 freestyle (24.37) and 200 butterfly (2:05.90) respectively. Sophomore Jennie Meade won the 200 freestyle event in 1:55.20 and EC Moore claimed victory in the 200 backstroke (2:08.38).
In the diving pool, senior Greg Detwiler posted a school-record 325.88 in the three-meter diving event, breaking the previos record (312.42) set by Scott Eagle in 1983.
On the men's side, senior Casey Cronin paced the Pirates winning the 200 IM (1:54.10) and the 200 breaststroke in 2:07.56, while classmate Gavin Stark won the 200 freestyle (1:43.74). Freshman Josh Barthlow won the 200 backstroke (1:53.16) and Andrew Dragunas won the 200 butterfly in 1:53.54. The 400 medley relay team of Barthlow, Cronin, Matt Donohue, and Kelly Hendrick placed first while also setting a season-best time of 3:24.52.
Seahawks junior diver Dean Berman broke a Minges Natatorium pool-record in the three-meter diving event (339.23). The previous record (312.42) was held by Eagle.
East Carolina will be in action again Feb. 23-26 when the Pirates travel to Houston, Texas for the Conference USA Championship for the women and the C-USA Invitational for the men.
