
Robin Smith and East Carolina Claim Tournament Championships

GREENVILLE, N.C.? East Carolina junior Robin Smith shot a final round 68 to finish seven-under par and walked away with the individual title (137) Saturday afternoon at the 10th Annual Bradford Creek Intercollegiate. The tournament was being played at the par-72, 7,120-yard Bradford Creek Golf Course. Due to heavy rains this week, tournament officials reduced the event to 36-holes.
Along with Smith's first place finish, the Pirates (59-57-2) also placed three other golfers in the top-15, marking the second consecutive tournament that at least four Pirates recorded top-25 placements. Senior Adam Howell finised tied for 13th (72-71=143), while fellow senior Brandon Pace (72-72) and freshman Chris Ault (72-72) finished tied for 15th with a final score of 144.
On the second day of competition, the Pirates (568) forged ahead of Campbell and Miami (Ohio) to take the team title, its first in the 10-year history of the tournament. Former Colonial Athletic Association foe VCU and Miami (Ohio) recorded even-par scores of 576, with VCU claiming second place honors on the tournament tie-breaker policy. Coker College finished fourth (579) and Campbell, last years champs, rounded out the top-five.
Old Dominion's Adam Condello finished three-strokes behind Smith for second place, while Robert Dinwiddie (Tenn. State), Daryl Chappell (VCU), Mike Calkin (Miami Ohio) and Vincent Dumauchel (Coker) finished tied for third with a score of 141, earning all-tournament honors.
"I really can't say how proud I am of this team," said Head Coach Kevin Williams. "In the last two events, four of our last five rounds have been real solid. We are starting to gel as a team and looking forward to the rest of the season."
The Pirates will be back in action March 28-29 when the host the Pinehurst Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C. on the No. 8 golf course.
