
Series Tied After Tigers Hold Off Pirates, 8-5

GREENVILLE, N.C.--Despite out-hitting the Tigers 15-10, ECU dropped a Saturday afternoon contest to Memphis, 8-5, in Conference USA action at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
Ryan Peisel led ECU (22-16, 8-9 C-USA), tying a career-high with four hits. The freshman infielder finished 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Mark Minicozzi hit 3-for-5 with a run scored while Adam Witter and Dale Mollenhauer each collected two hits.
Scott Andrews suffered the loss for ECU, allowing four earned runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two in 1 2/3 innings of work. Flye went seven innings in relief before giving way to Chris Powell. Flye allowed three runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four. Powell retired one batter in the top of the ninth.
Neil Schenk earned his first win of the season for Memphis (10-27, 4-13 C-USA), tossing 6 1/3 innings, and allowing four runs on 12 hits while striking out two. Drew Jaudon came in to relieve Schenk, going the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits while walking one.
Jordan Tolliver and K.K. Chalmers each collected three hits for Memphis with Tolliver going 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored and Chalmers hitting 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Ryan Martin and Adam Amar also tallied multiple hits on the day.
Chad House plated the first run of the game in the top of the first when he scored from third on a Mollenhauer error at shortstop. A Robbie Goss sacrifice fly to center scored Tolliver from third for the Tiger's second run of the ballgame.
Tolliver's single to center in the top of the third scored Patrick Hope before Martin hit a two-run homer to left-center, putting the Tigers up 5-0 after two.
Three consecutive singles in the fourth led to Memphis' sixth run when Amar plated Tolliver with a single to right.
ECU got on the board in the fourth when Jay Mattox brought home Peisel on a fielder's choice ground ball to third. Mollenhauer followed Mattox with a bloop single to center, scoring Costanzo from third, cutting the lead to 6-2.
Chalmers hit his first career home run with a solo shot down the line in right in the top of the fifth, giving Memphis a 7-2 lead.
Chalmers doubled in the top of the seventh, scoring Cory Barton from first, increasing the Tiger lead to 8-2.
East Carolina loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with three consecutive singles by Minicozzi, Witter and Peisel. Runners moved up with Minicozzi scoring on a wild pitch before Costanzo walked to load the bases for Jake Smith. Smith proceeded to single to leftfield, scoring Witter and Peisel to cut the Memphis lead to 8-5.
The Pirates and the Tigers will play the final game of the three-game series Sunday at Clark-LeClair Stadium at 11 a.m.
