Pirates And Hose Shutout The Citadel 3-0
April 26, 2005 | Baseball
The 3-0 shutout marks the second consecutive Hose start in which the Pirates held their opponent scoreless. Left-hander P.J. Connelly combined with Hose on both of the shutouts.
Kevin Rhodes saw his first action since April 10 when he relieved Hose in the top of the sixth. He threw 24 pitches facing six batters while allowing just one hit before giving way to Connelly to close the game. Connelly recorded his first save of the season allowing no hits in 2 2/3 innings.
The Pirates (24-16, 9-9) struck gold early when Mark Minicozzi and Ryan Peisel connected on back-to-back singles in the top of the first. Catcher Jake Smith drew a bases loaded walk off of Bulldog starter Jamie Maxwell to plate Mark Minicozzi for an early 1-0 lead. Freshman Dale Mollenhauer drove in the Pirates second run of the inning with a line shot to right field scoring Peisel from third before Mike Grace was called out at home in a run down to end the inning.
Freshman Jamie Ray lead off the top of the fifth with a single to left and promptly stole second base three pitches later. After Brett Lindgren flied out to center, senior Brian Cavanaugh roped a double down the rightfield line off of Evan Burgess to score Ray from second for the final run of the game.
Minicozzi led the Pirates with three hits and extended his hitting streak to five games. Peisel and Mollenhauer each added two hits.
Maxwell suffered his third loss of the season, going four innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out one.
East Carolina returns to Greenville this weekend to host C-USA opponent Cincinnati April 29 - May 1 at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
