Heinchon Promoted To Head Men's Tennis Coach
July 26, 2005 | Men's Tennis
After serving as the Pirates' head men and women's tennis coach for the past seven seasons, Morris will now coach exclusively with the women's team, while overseeing the men's program.
During his initial season at East Carolina, Heinchon guided senior Paulo Baumer to Third-Team All-Conference USA honors, becoming just the second men's tennis player at ECU to earn C-USA post-season accolades.
Prior to joining the Pirates' coaching staff a year ago, Heinchon served as assistant men's tennis coach at Wake Forest for six seasons, helping the Deacons to four NCAA team appearances. During his tenure in Winston-Salem, he coached 10 All-Atlantic Coast Conference players, two ACC Rookies-of-the-Year and defeated three nationally-ranked top 10 opponents.
"This is a great opportunity for both ECU and Shawn," stated Morris. "This is a move that will be mutually beneficial for the men and women's team and Shawn. He is a proven assistant coach and already possesses the leadership and teaching qualities of a head coach. I'm looking forward to seeing the men's team progress under his direction."
In 2002, Heinchon was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Assistant Coach-of-the-Year and was a finalist for the National Assistant Coach-of-the-Year award.
"I feel extremely fortunate to be given this opportunity," said Heinchon. "I'm looking forward to continuing to build the men's tennis team at East Carolina into a regional power and nationally competitive program."
