Pirate Volleyball Loses Opener to the Tribe, 3-2

GREENVILLE, N.C.--The East Carolina volleyball team dropped the season-opener to William & Mary, 3-2, Saturday night in front of 623 fans in Minges Arena. Senior outside hitter Pam Ferris recorded a career-high 23 kills while adding 17 digs to record a double-double in a losing effort.
William & Mary (1-1) won the first game, 30-21, behind five kills from Mandy Mayo. The Tribe out-hit the Pirates .273 to .024 the first game. ECU (0-1) rebounded to take the second game by a score of 30-27. Ferris and Erica Wilson each picked up six kills while the Pirates hit .311.
The Tribe won the third game, 30-25, before ECU evened the match up at 2-2, winning the fourth game, 30-28. Kate Woffindin and Sarah Long each picked up five kills in game three while Ferris added seven kills in game four to lead the Pirates.
The score was tied at five in the fifth game before the Tribe went on a 5-2 run. ECU was unable to battle back as William & Mary took the game and the match with a 15-12 win in game five.
Jaime Bevan finished with 14 kills while Wilson and Kim Jefferson each collected 13. Katie Jannusch, who recorded just seven kills all of last season, finished with eight on the night while also collecting 13 digs.
Libero Trish Monroe led the Pirates with 22 digs in her first career match. Setter Heidi Krug came just one assist short of her career-high, finishing with 63. Krug and Wilson also collected double-digit digs with 17 apiece.
Woffindin led the Tribe with 16 kills while Natalie King finished with 52 set assists. Four different Tribe players finished with double-digit digs led by Kathleen Hawley's 16.
ECU finished the match hitting .211 while William & Mary hit .239. The Tribe collected 14.5 blocks on the night while ECU finished with four.
The Pirates return to action Thursday, Sept. 1 when the team travels to Greensboro, N.C. to face N.C. A&T at 7 p.m.
