Walters Leads East Carolina In First Men's Tennis Tournament

RALEIGH, N.C. - Brian Walters turned in the top win total for the East Carolina men's tennis squad during its season-opening play at Residence Inn North Wolfpack Invitational, capturing three singles matches and teaming with Nick Rose for a win in a doubles matchup.
In all, the Pirates notched seven singles victories and added two wins in doubles action.
In singles play, Walters defeated Andy Caress of Coastal Carolina 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-2 before winning decisively over Elon's Kyle Smialek (6-1, 6-2). He registered his final singles victory of the day against B.J. Sky of American 6-3, 6-3. Walters completed the tournament topping ECU in victories but was followed closely by Nick Rose.
After dropping the first set against Felix Bernhoerster (N.C. State), Rose rebounded to pull out a 0-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory. In a second singles match, Rose dispatched Winthrop's Alejandro Portugal by a 7-6 (0), 6-3 count.
Rose and Walters paired to add an 8-4 doubles victory over Vasjraa Gorjup and Florent Wilpotte of Campbell. In other doubles action, Britton Steele and Mike Catalano teamed to defeat Andre Iriarte and David Rozek of N.C. State.
Other Pirates who logged triumphs include Henrique Viana (6-4, 6-4 over Marc Ladoucer of UNC Greensboro) and Steele, who posted a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over James Trussler.
The Pirates will be back in action this weekend when they compete at the UNC Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
