BOONE, N.C.--The Pirates swept their final two matches of the Broyhill Inn Appalachian Classic with a 3-1 win over High Point in the first game Saturday and a 3-0 shutout victory over Tennessee Tech in the 5 p.m. match. The Pirates improve to 3-2 on the season after finishing 2-1 in the Broyhill Inn tournament.
ECU 3, High Point 1
Erica Wilson recorded 23 kills, just one short of her career high, to lead East Carolina to the 3-1 win over High Point in the first game of the Broyhill Inn Appalachian Classic on Saturday. Wilson, who committed just two errors on 41 attack attempts, finished with an attack percentage of .512. As a team, ECU hit .335 on the match while the Panthers hit .255.
Pam Ferris and Kim Jefferson also contributed with solid efforts offensively, with 16 and 14 kills respectively. Jaime Bevan also added eight kills for the Pirates. Libero Johanna Bertini led the Pirates in digs for the first time this season, picking up 21. Ferris and Katie Jannusch each tallied eight digs while Wilson and Heidi Krug each picked up seven. Krug directed the Pirate offense recording 60 assists. Defensively, Ferris picked up one block and one block assist while Mignon Dubenion assisted on three blocks.
Four Panthers finished with double-digit kills led by Jamie Kaufman's 14. Michelle Feiser picked up 41 assists while Kristina Taylor added 19. Kaufman also led High Point with 11 assists while Feiser led the defense with one solo block and two block assists. The Panthers fall to 1-2 with the loss.
The Pirates picked up two close wins in the first two games, winning 33-31 and 30-27. High Point won the third game 30-25 before ECU took the match with a dominating 30-17 win in the fourth and final game.
ECU 3, Tennessee Tech 0
Pam Ferris and Katie Jannusch each recorded a double-double as ECU defeated Tennessee Tech, 3-0, in the Pirates' second match of the day. Ferris led the Pirates in both kills (14) and digs (20) while Jannusch picked up 11 kills and 16 digs en route to the victory.
Ferris, who finished with a .464 attack percentage, committed only one error in 28 attack attempts. Kim Jefferson and Erica Wilson led the Pirates defensively at the net. Jefferson picked up one solo block and five block assists while Wilson contributed with five block assists of her own. Jaime Bevan, who also made a solid effort defensively with four block assists, added seven kills on the offensive side while Wilson and Heidi Krug each tallied six kills on the night. Krug led the way for ECU with 41 assists while Johanna Bertini joined Ferris and Jannusch in the double-digit dig column with 16.
The Pirates recorded their second shutout of the season winning 30-20, 30-27 and 30-23. As a team, ECU finished with an attack percentage of .252, while Tennessee Tech hit just .106. Team defense also proved to be a factor as the Pirates recorded 11 more digs and four more blocks than the Golden Eagles.
Tennessee Tech's Anne Morrow and Jessica Seyfert combined for 23 of the team's 41 kills. Morrow recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs while Seyfert added 10 kills and seven digs. Katherine Lang led the team with 23 assists while Jessica Dickerson and Laura Tyburski also picked up 11 digs to join Morrow. TTU drops to 1-2 with the loss.
Pam Ferris and Erica Wilson were named to the Broyhill Inn Appalachian All-Tournament Team. Appalachian's Dianna Thomas was voted tournament MVP by the participating coaches.
The Pirates will return to the courts when the team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio to face Ohio State, Chicago State and host Bowling Green in the BGSU Invitational, Sept. 9-10. ECU will face Ohio State Friday, Sept. 9 in the tournament opener at 4:30 p.m.
