GREENVILLE, N.C.--The East Carolina baseball team officially began practice this week at Clark-LeClair Stadium in preparation of the start of the season that is just three weeks away. First-year head coach Billy Godwin and his staff directed the team through drills that included hitting, pitching, fielding and baserunning.
"This has been a great week of practice for us," said Godwin. "The kids worked hard during the off season and over Christmas break and it really shows. We came out ready to practice and I'm happy with where we are at. We still have a lot of work to do, but we'll get it done and be ready for Feb. 10."
The Pirates return 15 lettermen from last year's 35-26 squad that appeared in the school's seventh straight NCAA tournament. Coach Godwin and his staff also welcome back six redshirt players as well as 11 newcomers to the program.
ECU opens the season with a weekend series against Maryland, Feb. 10-12 at Clark-LeClair Stadium. The Pirates, who were forced to play on the road the entire month of February last year due to the construction of Clark-LeClair, will begin the '06 season with 15 straight home games before the team travels to Cal State Fullerton, March 10-12.
