CHARLESTON, S.C. - Juniors Luiza Borges and Alex Smith captured the doubles play title in the Isle of Palms division to highlight East Carolina's participation in the College of Charleston Invitational over the weekend.
Borges and Smith rolled to the championship after posting wins over Davidson's Ali Gores/Emily Wilkinson (8-3), College of Charleston's Amanda Becker/Laura Borza (8-3) and Davidson's Lora Duschanova/Kate Levitt (9-8/2). In the same bracket, the Lady Pirates' tandem of sophomore Presley Thomas and freshman Brooke Walter earned a third-place finish by handing Becker/Borza an 8-5 loss after splitting their opening two matches.
ECU's other doubles team of note, juniors Zandy Overcash and Hannah Priest, advanced to the title match of the Sullivan's Island division after wins against Elon (8-6) and South Carolina State (default) before falling 8-3 in the finals match against the Phoenix' second entry - Whitney Butcher/Frances Rudolph.
Smith topped all East Carolina singles players by tallying three victories to earn a third-place standing in the Sullivan Island division. After registering triumphs over Davidson's Rebecca Jameson (6-4, 6-2) and College of Charleston's Julia Howard (6-3, 6-1), and a setback against Gores (6-1, 6-1), Smith rallied past Wilkinson in her final match for a top three finish.
Overcash (Sullivan's Island) and Priest (Isle of Palms) contributed a pair of singles wins each to round out other notable ECU performances.
The Lady Pirates will continue their fall season at the Wolfpack Invitational in Raleigh during the weekend of Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 1.
