CHARLESTON, S.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad captured six of 10 doubles matches while freshmen Tim Peeler and Stephen Whitwell logged a pair of singles wins each to help the Pirates close out their fall schedule at the College of Charleston Shootout last weekend.
In a format which featured direct team-against-team competition versus Appalachian State, The Citadel and host College of Charleston, ECU took six of 10 overall matches against the Mountaineers before splitting 10 against the Bulldogs and dropping eight of 11 to the Cougars.
Peeler outlasted ASU's Zack Williams (4-6, 6-1, 1-0/8) and recorded a shortened 6-3, 4-1 win over Frederic Pefrilli of The Citadel while Whitwell posted ECU's only singles win against the College of Charleston (7-6/6, 6-1 over Steven Myers) before defeating Chris Beach of The Citadel 6-4, 6-2.
Peeler also played a key role in East Carolina's most successful doubles team, pairing with sophomore Bryan Walters to log a perfect 3-0 record. Peeler and Walters tallied an 8-3 win over Britten Webb/Williams (ASU), an 8-3 decision against Myers/Alex Rowedder (CofC) and an 8-2 triumph vs. The Citadel's Beach/Pefrilli. In addition, sophomore Aleksey Kochetov and junior Henrique Viana teamed up for a pair of victories - handing Dimtra Dimitrov/Ryan Bradshaw (ASU) and Or Dakel/Marcus Digliodo (CofC) 8-5 and 9-8/6 setbacks, respectively.
Other ECU singles winners included junior Mike Catalano (vs. ASU), freshman Bryan Oakley (vs. The Citadel), Kochetov (vs. ASU) and Walters (ASU).
The Pirates will open their spring season Jan. 19-20 at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational in Richmond.
