
Young Leads Pirates To 77-72 Overtime Win Against UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - Jasmine Young scored a career-high 25 points to help the East Carolina women's basketball team to a 77-72 overtime victory over UTEP Friday night at the Don Haskins Center.
The Pirates (15-9, 7-6) trailed the Miners (13-12, 5-8) by six, 63-57, with 19 faithful seconds on the clock before Young took over. With 13.7 seconds remaining in regulation, Young connected on the first of three consecutive 3-pointers to pull the Pirates within three, 63-60.
After an Ana Valtierra free throw put the Miners up four, 64-60; Young dashed down the court and drained another three from the top of the arc to pull within one, 64-63, with six seconds remaining. The Pirates put Whitney Thornton on the line hoping to get a shot at sending the game into overtime. Thornton sank both attempts and with 1.3 seconds remaining in regulation, Young fired a three-pointer from just two feet inside of half-court to send the game into overtime.
During the extra period, it was all ECU as they out scored UTEP 11-6 for their 15th win of the season and seventh in Conference USA play. Junior center Cherie Mills netted five of her 13 during the extra frame, while Young sealed the Miners fate with two free throws with two seconds remaining.
Trailing by 10, 47-37, with 11:47 remaining in the game, ECU went on a 14-5 run to cut the lead to 52-51. Senior guard Ebonee Downey got the run started when she sank her second three-pointer in 56 seconds. Young would score five straight points and Catherine Coley's baseline jumper tied the game at 47-47 with 8:21 left in regulation.
Mills jumper with just over four minutes remaining pulled the Pirates within one, 52-51 to close out the run. Over the next 3:31, the two teams traded baskets until UTEP's Ingrid Goslin connected on both free throw attempts giving the Miners a five point lead, 62-57.
ECU's LaCoya Terry recorded her seventh double digit game of the season and fourth in her last five games with 12 points. Freshman Jessica Honesty came off the bench and scored a career-high eight points while grabbing a career-high five rebounds. For freshman guard Jasmine Young, she hit a career-high six 3-pointers and collected seven assists. With her three steals on the night, she has 68 for the season which ties Gaynor O'Donnell for the eight-best single-season performance.
UTEP was led by Thornton's near double-double of 20 points and nine rebounds. Her 20 points were a career-high. Valtierra made three 3-pointers and recorded her second career double-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.
With the win, ECU secured its first winning season since 2000-01 when they finished 16-12.
The Pirates will travel to New Orleans on Sunday to take on Tulane with a 3 p.m. tip scheduled.
