Men's Swimming & Diving Leads Invitational After Day One

Houston, Texas - The ECU men's swimming and diving team is in first place after the first day of the Men's Invitational while the women's team ranks in a tie for third at the 2006 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship. Both events are being held at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium at the University of Houston.
SMU leads on the women's side with a total of 80 points, followed by Rice (66), East Carolina (62), Houston (62), Tulane (58) and Marshall (52). On the men's side, East Carolina holds a convincing first place position with 122 points, followed by SMU (97) and Hawai'i (88).
The half-day opener began with the 1-meter men's diving and followed up with the finals in the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay, 1-meter men's diving and men's and women's 800-yard freestyle relay.
Hawaii freshman Mats Wiktorsson won the diving competition with a score of 336.35 in the finals and SMU senior Philip Griffin finished second with a finals mark of 334.70. The Pirates claimed spots three through six in the competition, led by senior Robbie Derr's 226.35 finals score. Ryan Hunt (255.70), Peter Bradyhouse (203.05) and Matt Larson (177.00) finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Derr and Larson both set personal bests with their scores Wednesday.
The women finished fourth in the 200-yard medley relay and third in the 800-yard freestyle relay while the men placed third in both the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
The 2006 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational will continue tomorrow, Thursday, Feb. 23 with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. (CT).
