MT. PLEASANT, S.C - The East Carolina women's tennis team used four singles wins and a doubles point to capture a 5-1 non-conference victory over the College of Charleston Saturday morning at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
In addition to bouncing back from a disappointing 4-2 loss at Coastal Carolina a day earlier, the win also improved the Lady Pirates' season record to 9-4. The Cougars dropped to 1-6 overall.
After dropping the first doubles match, ECU quickly posted wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots when the tandems of Gillie Bailey/Kirstin Buchanan and Luiza Borges/Mireia Gol teamed up for 8-4 and 8-5 victories, respectively, to secure the first point.
In singles play, the Lady Pirates took all but one match as Bailey (6-3, 6-4 at No. 2), Gol (6-2, 6-1 at No. 3), Borges (6-0, 6-2 at No. 5) and Presley Thomas (6-2, 6-1 at No. 6) booked wins. The fourth-flight match between Buchanan and the Cougars' Ashley Finnegan was halted by rain.
East Carolina's match later in the afternoon against Charleston Southern was cancelled because of inclement weather and is not expected to be made up. The Lady Pirates will return to action Saturday, March 4 when they travel to Boone to face Appalachian State.
