
Softball Falls To Houston In Series Finale

HOUSTON- East Carolina dropped to 1-2 in Conference USA following a 6-1 loss to Houston in the rubber game of the weekend series Sunday at Cougar Stadium.
The Pirates (16-7) recorded just three hits off a pair of Cougar pitchers, including two off the bat of sophomore Beth Nolan. Junior Jessica Potter collected the team's only other hit.
The Cougars (20-10, 2-1 C-USA) racked up eight hits and touched up junior Keli Harrell for five earned runs in 5.1 innings as she suffered her second consecutive loss.
Angel Shamblin retired nine of the final 10 batters faced, including striking out the side in the seventh inning. She allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings of relief, while 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Christa Raley homered to give Houston an early 1-0 advantage in the third inning.
ECU responded with a RBI-single in the fourth inning by Potter to even the score at 1-1. The Pirates tried to take the lead on the Potter single sending Jessica Johnson home from second base, but centerfielder Katie Bush tossed her out at the plate to keep the score tied at 1-1.
Shamblin's RBI-double in the fourth inning plated the winning-run, giving Houston the lead for good. UH later added a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the final margin.
ECU returns to the diamond Tuesday against Delaware. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start in Newark, Del. ECU returns home to face Sacred Heart on Thursday.
